A study of of German painter and printmaker Hans Holbein the younger (1497-1543) which emphasizes his position between Hieronymus Bosch's medieval vision and the ideals of the Italian Renaissance. Close-ups of objects in his paintings and animation of certain prints are used to trace the development of his painting, drawing, and etching in the context of his life as a diplomat and court painter. He moved successfully out of the restrictive boundaries of his homeland to achieve wealth and fame in foreign courts and cities. Henry VIII utilized Holbein's talents to the fullest, glorifying himself and the royal personages. Holbein painted powerful men and had a stark eye for the skull beneath the smile, the corruption under the plush robes. Includes his drawings illustrating Erasmus' Praise of Folly.
