Inhalt | "Marrakashi Trance is made of an artists work. The 80 year old German Painter Hans Werner Geerdts lives in the Medina of Marakech since four decades. His art work is centered around jemaa el fna, the famous place near Kutubiya mosque with ist acrobats, story tellers, magicians, snake charmers. Especially the halqas of members of the black Gnawa brotherhood, their trance music and dances of spirit posession, influenced and inspired him. Since 30 yearsd Geerdts dreamt of prolonging his artistic expression by adding the dimensions sound and movements to his painting. As I carried my DVCam while visiting him, I could help him going towards a realisation of his vision. He agein called me to Marrakech to produce an animation film together with his neighbour Sheva Fruitman, an American Photographer. Experimenting with forms of on verbal cinema in Visual Antropology I was hoping to find artistic means of representing inner states of mind like trance that go beyond the limitations of science. We joint the three forms of visual art to achieve what might be considered as a kind of indirect ethnographic representation: Moroccan realities observed through the eyes of a painter, arranged by the hands of a still photographer, caught through the lense of the DVCam, arranged and combined with jemaamusic on a PowerBook in the artists riad."
